The Emory women's basketball team (15-9, 7-6 UAA) concluded its weekend road trip on Sunday afternoon, taking on the WashU Bears (16-8, 7-6 UAA) at the WashU Fieldhouse in St. Louis, Missouri. Despite entering the second half with a nine-point lead, the Eagles could not overcome a second half surge from the Bears as Emory fell, 83-66.
Sophomore
Alexandra Loucopoulos led the scoring for Emory, scoring 15 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. Senior
Erin Martin was the other Eagle to reach double digits in the scoring column, scoring 10 points to go with nine rebounds.
Loucopoulos kicked off the scoring for Emory, rattling home a three on the team's opening possession before converting a layup just moments later. The New Jersey native scored on a driving layup just a few minutes later to account for seven of the first nine points for the Eagles. The Eagles and Bears continued to trade shots in the early going, with the game tied up at 18 points apiece with three minutes left in the quarter. The offenses went dry, with Emory scoring one field goal in the remaining minutes to take a 20-18 lead into the second quarter.
The offense was reinvigorated early in the second quarter when graduate student
Hanna Malik knocked down a three. The triple from Malik kicked off a 17-4 run over the next five minutes for the Eagles, with Martin adding five points during the scoring run. After the barrage of scoring, the Eagles led 37-24 with five minutes to go in the half.
The Bears clawed their way back in down the final few minutes of the half, pulling within nine before heading into the break. The Eagles led 42-33 heading into the half.
The third quarter was a strong one for WashU, with Jessica Brooks and Lexy Harris answering the call for the Bears. After opening the quarter with a couple of quick baskets down low, the Eagles went cold whereas the Bears began to heat up. Over a five-minute stretch, the Bears went on an 18-4 run while shooting six-of-10 from the field all while holding Emory to one-of-seven. Brooks and Harris combined for 16 points in the frame, as the Bears brought things level at 57 points apiece heading into the fourth quarter.
The momentum carried right over into the fourth quarter for the Bears, as they went on to outscore the Eagles 26-9 and run away with an 83-66 win. Harris and Brooks scored the final 23 points for WashU as well, as they finished with 33 and 21 points, respectively.
The Bears finished with 46 points in the paint to Emory's 30. WashU dominated the turnover battle as well, finishing with just five turnovers to Emory's 16.
With the loss, the Eagles drop to 15-9 overall and 7-6 in conference play. Emory finds itself in a tie for third in the UAA with just one game remaining in the regular season.
Emory will be back on the road next weekend to wrap up its regular season against the Rochester Yellowjackets. The game against Rochester will start at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 1
st.
