The No. 7 ranked Emory University men's basketball team faltered in its second game of the weekend road trip, falling to No. 18 ranked WashU, 85-75, in St. Louis, Missouri.
Junior Ben Pearce went for a game-high 25 points as the Eagles slipped to 19-5 (9-4 UAA) with one game remaining in the regular season. The Bears were headlined by Hayden Doyle's 22 points as they improved to 19-5 as well on the season and into a tie with Emory for second in the conference standings.
Pearce was joined by three other Eagles in double figures on Sunday as sophomore Ethan Fauss recorded 13 points off the bench while senior Logan Shanahan and junior Jair Knight notched 12 and 10 points, respectively. Knight grabbed a team-high nine rebounds with Shanahan totaling eight on the glass. Sophomore AJ Harris added nine points in 31 minutes and reached a career-high with five steals.
Within the opening seconds, Pearce supplied the first basket of the game as he converted his first three-point attempt. WashU then quickly forced the Eagles into catch-up mode as the Bears moved ahead by six at 9-3. With the game tied at 10-10, the Bears rattled off seven consecutive points to lead 17-10 with 11:25 remaining in the half.
Emory then used a 12-4 run over the next 4:22 to regain its first lead since the first nine seconds as Knight put home a layup to give the Eagles a 22-21 advantage. Fauss led the charge in the run with five points with Knight and Shanahan also contributing.
A 9-0 spurt from the Bears after Knight's bucket pushed WashU back ahead by seven at 30-22 and remained in the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Eagles quickly slashed the WashU lead to one at 41-40 with an 8-2 run in the two minutes after the return from the break but a Doyle answer three kept Emory from taking the lead once more.
Following the Bears making it a three-possession game with 14:23 left to play, Fauss converted two quick buckets to bring the Eagles to within five at 57-52 with 12:49 on the clock. Out of a timeout though, WashU's edge rapidly swelled to double digits and soon the Bears led by as many as 13 at 74-61.
Shanahan and Pearce put together a mini 5-0 run to cut the deficit to single digits but a tip-in from the Bears' George Gale with 3:51 bumped the lead back to 10 and thwarted Emory's last comeback attempt.
Shanahan's converted free throw attempts made it 79-70 with 1:11 to play but the Bears went 6-for-6 from the line over the final 71 seconds to seal the win.
Next up for the Eagles will be a trip to Rochester, New York where Emory will oppose the University of Rochester in the regular season finale on Saturday, March 1. Tip off from the Palestra is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
