The No. 5 ranked Emory University women's tennis team earned its fifth straight win this spring as the Eagles tamed the No. 18 ranked Sewanee Tigers Sunday afternoon in Atlanta.
The Eagles ran their record to 5-0 this spring with the win and will head into next week's ITA National Indoor Championships with three top 20 wins under their belt. For Sewanee, they suffer their first loss of the season to drop to 3-1.
Sunday's match began with three battles across the doubles courts but it was Emory that prevailed with a clean sweep to kick start the match.
For the first time this spring, junior Emily Kantrovitz and freshman Rachel Hernandez paired together and came away with a 7-5 result at the No. 3 position to lead off the match for the Eagles. Junior Izzy Antanavicius and Iris Berman were bumped up to the No. 1 position and came through with a tiebreaker win to seal the doubles points, 7-6 (1). At the second spot, senior Eliza McPherron and sophomore Yanire Marte concluded the sweep with a 6-4 decision.
Leading 1-0 through doubles, Kantrovitz quickly doubled the Emory lead as she made quick work of Sewanee's Brooke Despriet on the No. 1 line with a 6-1, 6-1 win. The clinching points in the match then came from Berman and Marte as Berman was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at the No. 3 position prior to Marte turning in a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at the No. 4 spot.
After the Tigers collected a three-set win over Antanavicius on the second court, McPherron and Hernandez rounded out the afternoon with matching 6-1, 6-1 results at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions.
Emory now heads to Memphis, Tennessee for the 2025 edition of the ITA National Indoor Championships. The Eagles, as the No. 5 seed in the draw, will face No. 3 ranked and No. 4 seeded Wesleyan University in the first round on Friday, Feb. 28 at 2:00 PM ET.
