The Emory University baseball team dropped its second game of the Firehouse Classic as the Eagles fell to Mount St. Joseph, 5-3, Saturday afternoon at Neal Posey Field on the campus of Huntingdon College.
Senior Brok Liu drove in a pair of runs for the Eagles in the defeat as he went 1-for-5 at the dish with a double. Senior Jonah Wronski collected two hits and an RBI and sophomore Aidan Conley added two hits including a triple on Saturday.
All eight runs in the contest came across in the first four innings as both teams got to each other's starting pitcher.
After trailing 1-0 through one frame, the Eagles got on the scoreboard in the third when Liu plated Wronski and sophomore Mitchell Smallwood with a double to left. The lead was short-lived however as the Lions got two back in their half of the third as they struck for two hits and HBP against Ryan Reynolds.
The teams continued to plate runs in the fourth as Emory tied things at 3-3 when Wronski scored Conley on a fielder's choice. A costly Eagle error in the home half of the fourth proved to be the difference though as MSJ scored two unearned runs to put them back in front at 5-3.
The Lions bullpen was then able to keep Emory off the scoreboard for the final five innings but not without a few threats from the Eagles' bats.
The Eagles put runners on base in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh frames but it was not until the ninth when Emory had its best scoring opportunity. With one out, sophomore Zach Hanson earned a pinch-hit single before a deep double to left center from Wronski put two Eagles in scoring position. Sophomore Jake Lawson drew a two-out walk to load the bases to bring Liu to the plate. Liu worked the count but ultimately struck out to end the threat and seal the win for the Lions.
The Firehouse Classic will conclude on Sunday as the Eagles will play the host Huntingdon Hawks in a scheduled 4:30 PM ET / 3:30 PM CT first pitch in Montgomery.
