The Emory University women's basketball program scored 24 points in the final quarter in their game against the University of Chicago Maroons on Friday night taking the matchup 62-55 in Chicago, Illinois.
The Eagles improve to 15-8 and move to 7-5 in conference play this season with their second win against the Maroons. Sophomores
Mary Mullinax and
Alexandra Loucopoulos led the Eagles offensively with 27 combined points while junior
Lily Kennedy notched a team-leading four assists and four rebounds in the matchup. Rounding out the top scorers for Emory was junior
Katherine Martini who also posted 12 points in the game.
After a quick 4-0 start from the Maroons, senior
Daniella Aronsky ended the scoring drought for the Eagles with the first three pointer of the day with 5:59 on the clock. Emory was scoreless again for the next three minutes with graduate student
Hanna Malik making a layup in the paint to continue to cut into Chicago's lead. The Maroons finished the quarter on a 5-2 run holding a seven point lead after the first quarter.
The beginning of the second quarter was all Emory with Loucopoulos and Martini opening with seven points to tie the game at 14 apiece. The next few possessions went back and forth seeing two more ties but Chicago was able to pull away with the lead again with just over five minutes on the clock. The final two minutes were quiet on both sides of the court with the Maroons taking a slight 24-20 lead into the locker room at the half.
Chicago continued their lead for most of the third quarter but the Eagles' offense was keeping right up going toe-to-toe with the Maroons. After Chicago held a 29-26 lead with 5:01 on the clock, the Eagles went on a 10-5 run in the next four minutes with a three pointer from Mullinax giving the lead back to the Eagles. Free throws from the Maroons tied the game again at 36-36 but Mullinax finished the quarter with a jumper at the buzzer for an Emory advantage.
Emory dominated the fourth quarter outscoring the Maroons 24-19. Mullinax and Loucopoulos posted 12 points in the opening three minutes of the quarter to give the Eagles their biggest lead of the matchup. Both teams continued toe-to-toe in the next four minutes with Emory being able to hold onto a seven-points, 57-50 advantage with just over three minutes on the clock. Both teams finished with five points in the final three minutes and the Eagles clinched the 62-55 win.
The Eagles will travel south to St. Louis, Missouri to face the WashU Bears at 1:00 PM EST on Sunday, February 23.
