Baseball Opens Firehouse Classic with Come-From-Behind Win Over Wheaton

The Emory University baseball program opened its weekend in Montgomery, Alabama with a come-from-behind win in the first game of the Firehouse Classic, taking down Wheaton College, 3-2, on the campus of Huntingdon College.

The Eagles erased a 2-0 deficit with three late-inning runs to improve to 4-3 on the season while the loss drops the Thunder to 0-2. Senior Matthew Sicoli highlighted the offense with three of Emory's seven hits, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Classmate Jack Halloran reached base four times as he was 1-for-2 with a double and three walks. Senior Blake Dincman drove in a pair as well to help Emory in the win.

Junior Josh Zuckerman drew the start for the Eagles and was dealing through three innings as he did not allow a run through his first three frames and struck out six batters. Control problems were a factor in the fourth stanza however as three walks and a HBP contributed to two Wheaton runs as the Thunder claimed a 2-0 edge. Zuckerman was saddled with a no decision on the afternoon as he worked four innings, allowing two runs on one hit. He finished with eight strikeouts but walked six.

Emory nearly drew even in the fifth as they loaded the bases but a fly out by sophomore Aidan Conley ended the threat. The Eagles continued to apply pressure in the sixth as they worked the bases loaded again, this time with no outs in the frame but only mustered one run in the inning as junior Adrien Armstrong came home on a double play.

The Eagles knotted the score at 2-2 their next time at the plate as Dincman brought home Sicoli with a ground out to the second. In the eighth, Emory took advantage of three walks prior to Dincman bringing home junior Zach Wasserlauf with the go-ahead run as he drew a clutch hit-by-pitch.

With the Eagles in front, they turned to senior Bennett Speicher who closed the door for his second save of the season as he walked one and struck out one in a scoreless ninth. Sophomore Nick Stellabotte was nails as well in relief as he spun two scoreless frames while striking out three to earn his second win as an Eagle.

Emory continues its trip to Montgomery with a single game against Mount St. Joseph on Saturday. First pitch from Huntingdon is set for 4:30 PM ET / 3:30 CT.
