The No. 7 ranked Emory University men's basketball team visited Chicago, Illinois Friday night and came away with a five-point victory as the Eagles defeated the University of Chicago, 77-72, at the Ratner Athletic Center.
Four different Eagles finished in double figures as Emory improved to 19-4 on the season and 9-3 inside UAA competition. Senior
Logan Shanahan supplied a game-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds while both juniors
Ben Pearce and
Jair Knight totaled 16 points each. Pearce added seven assists with Knight corralling a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore
AJ Harris joined them in double figures as he recorded 11 points and was one of three Eagles to knock down three three-pointers on the evening.
Three-point shooting was the theme of the game in the first half as both teams seemingly could not miss from beyond the arc. Both teams started a combined 5-for-7 from distance and Emory was unreal from long range in the early goings as the team converted its first six attempts from three and opened 10-for-11 past the arc.
Despite the hot shooting start, the Eagles trailed 32-31 with just under eight minutes remaining in the opening half. However, a pivotal 13-0 run over the next 2:22 helped the Eagles distance themselves from the Maroons. Triples from Shanahan, Knight and junior
John Coppolino IV as well as another highlight reel alley-oop connection from Pearce and Knight established a 44-32 advantage.
Chicago remained resilient however and cut the Emory lead to five at 46-41 heading into the locker room at the break.
In the second half, the Eagles were the aggressors early in the return to the court and built their largest lead of the night with a 67-53 score with 11:48 left to play. Another run however by the Maroons, this time a 7-0 burst, slashed the Emory lead down to single digits at 69-63 with 9:02 to go. Over the three minutes, UC made it a four-point game as the Eagles were in front 71-67 with 6:22 on the clock.
The defense prevailed over the final minutes of regulation as the Eagles limited Chicago to just two successful field goals over the final 5:48 and forced the Maroons to miss six shots and convert two costly turnovers. Shanahan knocked down his third triple of the night during that span to help clinch the win.
Emory will continue its road swing to end the season with a rematch against #18 WashU on Sunday, Tip off from St. Louis is set for 1:00 PM ET / 12:00 PM CT.
