#8 Women’s Basketball Skates Past Oglethorpe 69-61 in Saturday Showdown

The Emory University women's basketball program earned its eight consecutive win of the season on Saturday afternoon after defeating the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels 69-61.

The Eagles saw three players reach double digit points including junior Mary Mullinax who posted a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds, a career-high. Emory outshot Oglethorpe 42.9% to 7.1% in 3PT% but the Stormy Petrels took advantage of 24 free throw attempts compared to Emory's 10.

Emory opened the first quarter with a 5-0 lead but Oglethorpe answered with six straight points to claim the lead. A tip-in from junior Caroline Connelly marked her first points of the game and took the lead back for the Eagles. Three pointers from classmates Emma Starr and Riley Allen and four points from senior Chloe Kruesser pushed Emory to a 16-10 lead after the first quarter.

The second quarter was the best for the Eagles outscoring the Stormy Petrels 22-21 in the 10 minutes before the half. Freshman Tatum Olson exploded on offense before a three pointer from junior Alexandra Loucopoulos gave Emory a 15-point lead, the biggest of the game thus far. Oglethorpe fought their way back with a 16-8 run in the final six minutes of the half taking a 38-31 score into the locker room.

After back-to-back layups to open the half, the Eagles were scoreless for the next four minutes before a three from Allen broke the scoring drought. Mullinax landed a three and two free throws before Kreusser ended the scoring for Emory in the third quarter.

Emory opened strong in the fourth quarter taking a 14-point lead capitalized by a three pointer from freshman Mia Strazza. After the Eagles reached a 66-52 lead with 5:39 remaining in the game, the Stormy Petrels finished the game with a 9-3 run but the effort wasn't enough and Emory reached its eighth win of the year.

The Eagles will hit the road tomorrow, December 7th to face the Huntingdon Hawks at 5:00 PM EST in Montgomery, Alabama.
