The Emory University women's basketball program reached the 100-point mark on Sunday afternoon defeating the Rhodes College Lynx 102-60 in Atlanta, Georgia. The win marks the first time the Eagles have seen 100 or more points since the beginning of last season.
Emory starts the season with a 5-0 record, the first since the 2016-17 season, and were led offensively by freshman
Tatum Olson who scored 23 points, 15 from three pointers, followed by 18 points from junior
Alexandra Loucopoulos. Classmate
Emma Starr also registered a career-high 14 assists in the game with eight points.
The Eagles dominated the court in shooting posting a 52.0 field goal percentage and a 45.9 three-point percentage. The Lynx were able to outshoot Emory at the free throw line with an 84.6 free throw average.
Rhodes jumped to a quick start with a 7-2 lead but the Eagles were able to flip the score and take a 17-12 lead capitalized by three pointers from Loucopoulos and classmate
Riley Allen. With 2:58 on the clock, the Lynx sank two free throws that ended their scoring in the quarter while Emory finished with 10 straight points for a 28-14 lead.
The offensive momentum continued for the Eagles opening the second quarter with a 13-12 run finished by a three pointer from Olson with just over five minutes to go in the half. Emory was able to mix points in the paint with three pointers to hold a 21-point lead, the biggest of the day thus far, with 1:48 left on the clock. Both teams finished with five points apiece fiving the Eagles a 57-36 lead at halftime.
Emory's defense continued working just as hard as the offense holding the Lynx to just three points in the opening five minutes of the third quarter. Rhodes attempted just one three pointer in the third while the Eagles were landing them like clockwork. Freshman
Savannah Seawell sank back to back layups at the end of the quarter to give Emory a 79-51 advantage.
The Emory defense continued to work allowing just nine points in the fourth quarter while scoring 23 points of its own. Loucopoulos scored the first five points of the last quarter and the Eagles went scoreless until senior
Chloe Kreusser landed a layup in the paint with 6:24 left in the game. Junior
Mary Mullinax got the Eagles to the 99
th point mark before a three pointer from Starr sealed the win with 34 seconds on the clock.
The Eagles will return to the Woodruff P.E. Center on Tuesday November 25 to face the Agnes Scott Scotties at 6:00 PM.
