The Emory University volleyball team opened the 2025 NCAA Tournament with a bang sweeping the Springfield College Pride in three straight sets on Thursday afternoon in Medford, Massachusetts.
The No. four seeded Eagles earn their 20
th win of the season following the match and will advance to the second round of the tournament. Emory was led offensively by senior
Kaya Monrose, junior
Gabija Staniskis and senior
Kate LaRocco who combined for 33 kills in the win.
The Eagles offense dominated the beginning of the first set with kills from Staniskis and LaRocco pushing Emory to a 15-3 start and forcing Springfield into a timeout. The Pride answered strong out of the break going on a 6-5 run leading the Eagles to their 20
th point of the set. Springfield continued to battle scoring seven more points in the set but Emory finished strong with kills from Staniskis and Monrose to take the first set, 25-16.
Set two saw a much closer start with the Pride holding the Eagles to just a five-point lead after reaching 10 points. Later in the set, Emory scored three straight points on kills from LaRocco and Staniskis to hold a 15-7 lead and force a timeout from Springfield. The Eagles were later able to take advantage of more attack errors from the Pride to earn their 20
th point of the set before finishing with an even 5-5 run with Springfield for another 25-16 set score.
Springfield was able to take their first lead of the game in the start of the third set opening with a 5-3 run but Emory quickly reclaimed the lead on kills from senior
Olivia Rabinowitz and LaRocco. After another 6-6 tie, the Eagles jumped to a 13-9 lead before the Pride fought their way back to a 14-14 score. Emory answered with a 6-2 run to reach its 20
th point of the set before finishing with a slight 5-4 run highlighted by more kills from LaRocco and Staniskis to clinch the opening round matchup with a 25-20 score.
The Eagles will compete in the second round of the tournament on Friday, November 21 at 4:30 PM and will face the winner of the East Texas Baptist/Maine Maritime game this afternoon.
