The Emory University volleyball program closed out the UAA Championships on Sunday morning falling to the Case Western Reserve Spartans in the fifth place match.
The Eagles finish the regular season with a 19-7 record and a 6-4 record against conference opponents. Emory will learn its postseason fate on Monday, November 17 at 1:00 PM during the Division III Selection Show.
Emory opened with an early lead in the first set with kills from seniors
Kaya Monrose and
Eliane Silberman pushing to a 9-5 start but the Spartans answered with five straight points to reclaim a 10-9 advantage. The set continued back and forth between both programs until CWRU's offense fought to a 23-19 lead. Three straight points from the Eagles brought them back to a one-point deficit but the Spartans clinched the next two points for a 25-22 win in set one.
The second set saw CWRU's momentum carry right over as they opened with a 12-8 lead highlighted by eight kills from the offense. After widening their lead to 15-10, the Spartans went on an 8-1 run before finishing with a kill and an error from Emory to dominate the second set, 25-14.
The Eagles weren't going down without a fight and took their own 11-8 advantage to start the third set. CWRU then tied the set at 11 apiece but Emory answered with a 12-4 run highlighted by kills from senior
Leneia Niko and service aces from teammates
Caroline Coyle and
Olivia Rabinowitz. The Spartans added three more points to their total but it wasn't enough as the Eagles took set three, 25-18.
CWRU's offense was moving as it opened the fourth set with eight kills in the first 10 points. Junior
Sophia Luo continued her offensive push adding two back-to-back kills for Emory leading the team to a five point, 20-15 deficit. The Spartans were then able to take advantage of a kill followed by four attack errors from the Eagles' offense to clinch the fifth place title with a set four score of 25-15.
