The Emory University women's golf program opened the annual Tartan Invitational on Monday afternoon and sits in a tie for second with New York University. The tournament is being played at the 5,663 yard, 72 par Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania.
The No. 1 ranked host Carnegie Mellon took the top spot on Monday shooting a 283 (-5) while the No. 2 ranked Eagles finished in a tie for second with fellow UAA opponent NYU at 284 (-4) to round out the top three. Four Eagles shot par or better in the opening rounds, each finishing in the top-20 individually.
Sophomore
Covi Yan led the way for Emory on Monday afternoon shooting a 70 (-2) to finish sixth on the individual leaderboard. After struggling with two bogeys and six pars on the front nine, she dominated the last nine holes with four birdies and four pars to finish the first round.
Following Yan was the junior duo of
Carys Code and
Esther Jung. The pair both shot 71 (-1) on the day to finish in a tie for 11
th place. Code shot three birdies to open the round before finishing with a +1 score on the back nine for her 71 score. Jung opened with a birdie and three pars before shooting an eagle on the par five fifth hole. She had the most pars on the team on the back nine shooting eight straight to finish the day.
Finishing the scoring for Emory was sophomore
Zimo Li who finished even on the day shooting a 70 (E) ranking 18
th individual. She shot a birdie and bogey on the front nine while also shooting three birdies on the back nine for her first round finish.
Freshman
Xinyi Zheng finished just behind Li shooting a 73 (+1) in the opening round to finish 22
nd on the individual scoreboard. After shooting par on the front nine with two birdies and two bogeys, she finished with a 37 (+1) on the back nine.
Fellow freshman
Jida Chiravachradej ended with a 79 (+7) after the first round to finish in 47
th in the individual rankings. She opened with a par and a birdie before finishing with eight more pars.
The Eagles will return to the course tomorrow, October 7 for the second round of the tournament beginning at 8:30 AM.
