#3 Men's Soccer Storms Past NYU, 6-3, for First UAA Win

The No. 3 ranked Emory University men's soccer team netted four second half goals Saturday afternoon to complete the comeback victory over New York University, 6-3, giving the Eagles their first University Athletic Association win of the season.

The Eagles remain unbeaten on the season following the win, now standing at 11-0-2 and 1-0-2 inside UAA play, while the Violets fall to 2-8-1 on the year and 0-3 in conference matches.

NYU had Emory on the ropes in the first half as the visitors scored just 3:54 into the contest and led 3-2 at the halftime break.

The Violets' Wilhelm Frisell played a through ball to a speeding Keyon Namdar who finished from close range for the first NYU goal of the game.

Senior Adeyemi Oni responded with back-to-back goals six minutes apart to give Emory a 2-1 advantage. Graduate student Danny Moya supplied Oni with the feed following a throw in to lead to the first score before Oni took advantage of a defensive miscue by the Violets to score again in the 20th minute.

NYU found its answer shortly thereafter when Ethan Zarka dribbled through the Emory defense and towards the end line before lifting a centering pass inside the box, finding Giulio Potenti who finished with the header. The Violets regained the lead just over two minutes later when NYU capitalized on an Emory turnover that led to a one-on-one scoring chance for Terra Nagai.

The Eagles were unfazed by the halftime deficit as the Blue & Gold answered with a flurry following the return to play, scoring the equalizer seven minutes into the second half.

Junior Lorenzo Avalos recorded the first of his two show-stopping goals of the afternoon in the 52nd minute when he dribbled around five NYU defenders before firing a low-ranging shot through the legs of one Violet defender and ricocheting his attempt off the far post to level things at 3-3.

Graduate student Ignacio Cubeddu joined in on the scoring less than two minutes after Avalos, putting the Eagles back in front with his 11th goal of the season. After taking a pass in front of the Emory bench, Cubeddu dribbled through two NYU defensemen prior to lofting a shot over the Violets' keeper.

Fellow graduate student Jack Burgess padded to the Emory total in the 62nd minute when Cubeddu headed a ball over an NYU defender allowing Burgess to one-time a shot to the right-side netting.

Avalos closed out the scoring in the 67th minute with a highlight-reel strike as he ripped a shot from freshman Terence Noh to top left shelf for his sixth goal of the season.

The Eagles look to continue the UAA momentum next Friday night when Emory hosts the No. 19 ranked University of Chicago Maroons for Senior Night.
