Six Emory Eagles were recognized Monday afternoon as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for their performances during the week of October 6-12.
Junior Kevin Mu led the Emory men's golf team to a first place finish at the Wabash Invitational where the Eagles turned in the third-lowest three-round score in team history. Mu led a contingent of five Eagles inside the top 15 as he claimed the medalist position on the individual leaderboard with a winning three-round score of 204, setting a new career-high in the process and coming in with the third-lowest three round total in team history. Mu's second round score of 65 also represented a new career best and the third-best round in program history.
Senior Sophia Garcia secured another clean sheet on Saturday as the No. 2 ranked Emory women's soccer team blanked No. 8 Brandeis, 3-0, in Waltham. Garcia made five saves on the afternoon to record her third consecutive shutout as well as her sixth solo clean sheet of the year. A pivotal save was made by her in the 52nd minute when she denied a Brandeis penalty kick opportunity, preserving a 1-0 Eagles' lead. The save immediately led to another Emory score as the Eagles cashed in on their very next possession, putting the game out of reach for the Judges at 2-0, en route to the three-goal victory.
Junior Hayden Tupper recorded the lone event win for the Emory men's swimming & diving team on Saturday as the Eagles hosted Georgia Tech in dual meet action. Tupper was an event winner in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 46.02 - the 4th fastest mark in the event in Division III so far this season. Tupper was also part of Emory's top relay teams in the meet, swimming anchor to help the A team to a third place finish in the 400 Medley Relay at 3:18.35 and swam the third leg for Emory's A group in the 200 Freestyle Relay as the Eagles placed third at 1:23.78. The 400 MR time is the fastest at the DIII level so far this season while the 200 FR time ranks sixth nationally as of Monday morning.
Sophomore Elodie Mitchell excelled once again for the Eagles on Saturday against the Yellow Jackets. Mitchell claimed two of the team's four wins in the meet, taking first in both the 200 Butterfly and 500 Freestyle, and was part of Emory's top relay team in the 400 Medley Relay. Mitchell turned in individual times that currently rank as the fastest in Division III so far this season with her 200 Fly mark of 2:02.01 and 500 Free time of 5:03.28. Additionally, she swam the anchor leg of Emory's A team in the 400 Medley Relay that finished third at 3:50.54.
Sophomore Solly Berkenwald was Emory's top male diver in the meet against Georgia Tech as led the Eagles on the boards. Berkenwald was Emory's top finisher in both events in the meet as he placed third in the 3-meter with a score of 320.78 and was second in the 1-meter at 323.55.
Junior Yanire Marte went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles against Division I competition to highlight the Emory women's tennis team at the Georgia Southern Shootout. In singles, Marte collected a pair of straight set wins as she defeated opponents from Austin Peay (6-3, 6-4) and Georgia Southern (7-5, 6-2). In doubles, she and sophomore Daniela Livson advanced to the finals of their respective draw following wins over duos from Austin Peay (7-6) and Kennesaw State (6-3). The final rounds of the GSS were cut short on Sunday due to inclement weather.
