#6 Volleyball Splits UAA Weekend with Chicago, NYU

The Emory University volleyball program competed in the second UAA Round Robin tournament of the 2025 season going 1-1 against University of Chicago and New York University in Cleveland, Ohio.
 
The Eagles hold a 13-3 overall record and a 4-1 record in conference play so far this season. The last UAA Round Robin will be played at the end of the month in Chicago, Illinois.
 
Game 1: Chicago 3, Emory 1
 
The Eagles were able to take a big advantage at the start of the first set with attack errors from Chicago but the Maroons answered with four straight points to reclaim a 6-5 lead. The advantage continued to go back and forth between both programs before Chicago was able to pull away with a 19-14 lead. After the Maroons scored their 24th point, Emory was able to add two more points to their tally but the Chicago finished the set with a 25-23 victory.
 
Emory took some of that momentum from set one into the second set opening with a 5-2 lead but again, the Maroons fought back to hold one-point advantage. Later in the set, Chicago was able to take an 18-12 lead before the Eagles went on an offensive run. Emory held the Maroons to four points at the end of the set while scoring 13 points of their own highlighted by kills from junior Sophia Luo and senior Kate LaRocco.
 
The two teams fought another tight battle in the third and fourth set with the Eagles holding the advantage in set three on seven occasions and the set was tied nine times. The Maroons ended the set with a 4-1 run to clinch the set, 25-23, to hold a two-set advantage. Set four was another battle with each team holding a slight advantage throughout the set. Once again, the Eagles scored 23 points in the match but Chicago was able to clinch the set and the match with a 25-23 score.
 
Game 2: Emory 3, NYU 1
The Violets dominated the opening set of the match starting with a 12-5 lead over the Eagles. Kills from junior Gabija Staniskis and senior Kaya Monrose helped Emory fight back to an 18-15 deficit before later tying the set at 20 apiece. The Eagles finished the set with a 5-2 run to clinch the first set, 25-22.
 
Set two opened with the Violets taking an 8-5 run before the Eagles tied the set at 8 apiece on three straight kills. The set was tied nine more times before seeing a 19-19 score towards the end of the set and NYU later looked to clinch the set with a 24-22 lead. Emory fought back to take a 25-24 lead but the Violets took their 25th point to tie the match. An attack error from the Violets and a kill from senior Eliane Silberman helped the Eagles take set two, 27-25.
 
The third set was another extra point battle with Emory opening with a 5-1 lead before the Violets later fought back to a 10-7 deficit. The battle continued back and forth until NYU tied the third set at 17 apiece. The Eagles had the win in sight holding a 24-22 lead but the Violets tied the set again with a 24-24 score. The offense fight went back and forth from both programs but NYU was able to pull away with a 29-27 set win.
 
Set four opened with both programs going point-for-point until Emory scored four-straight points to hold a 14-10 lead. The Violets then went on a 9-4 run to take a 19-18 advantage over the Eagles. Emory came within sight of the win again holding a 24-22 advantage but NYU then took a 25-24 lead. The Eagles finished with three straight points to take the match with a 27-25 score in set four.
 
The Eagles will return to the WoodPEC on Friday, October 17 to face Trinity in a rematch of the 2024 NCAA Regional Final at 5:00 PM.
