Women’s Basketball Downs Atlanta-Foe Oglethorpe, 81-61, Sunday Afternoon

The Emory University women's basketball team defeated Atlanta-foe Oglethorpe, 81-61, on Sunday afternoon after hitting the road in the team's final non-conference matchup of the season.
 
The Eagles improve to 8-3 on the season with the win and were led by sophomore Alexandra Loucopoulos on the offense scoring a career-high 18 points. Teammates Hanna Malik, Morgan Laudick and McKenzi Carter all followed with nine points each while Laudick led the team with six rebounds.
 
The first five minutes of the first quarter saw points on both sides of the court with the Stormy Petrels tying the game at eight apiece before the Eagles went on a 10-4 run finished with a three pointer from junior Lily Kennedy at the 2:49 mark. Oglethorpe landed another basket in the quarter but the offensive run continued for Emory finishing the first quarter with a 24-14 advantage.
 
Emory's defense continued working hard into the second quarter holding Oglethorpe scoreless in the first two and a half minutes while taking their biggest lead of the day at 17 points. The Eagles were then held scoreless until the 5:01 mark with junior Chloe Kreusser landing a layup in the paint bringing the score to 33-19. The Stormy Petrels went on a 10-5 run highlighted by layups from the offense for a 38-29 score heading into the locker room.
 
Oglethorpe opened the third quarter with three points but from there it was all Emory offense taking a 50-34 advantage with just under five minutes left in the quarter. The Eagles were then held scoreless for the next three minutes scoring four more points for a 55-38 lead before ending the quarter on a 3-3 run with the Stormy Petrels to enter the fourth quarter.
 
Emory dominated the start of the fourth quarter scoring nine points in the first minute and a half to hold a 67-44 advantage and force a timeout from Oglethorpe. Both sides of the court continued to see points with the Eagles taking a slight 8-6 run over the Stormy Petrels for a 74-50 score with 3:58 left on the clock. Oglethorpe finished the game on an 11-7 run but the effort fell short and the Eagles took the matchup 81-61.
 
The Eagles will start conference play on Saturday, January 11 where they will face the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets at 3:00 PM in Atlanta, Georgia.
