The Emory University women's basketball program fell in its UAA opener to the Rochester Yellowjackets, 74-51, on Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Eagles fall to 8-4 on the season following the matchup while Rochester improves to 8-4 with the UAA opening win. Sophomore
Alexandra Loucopoulos and junior
Lily Kennedy led Emory offensively with 10 points each while senior
Morgan Laudick posted 13 rebounds on the day.
The first few points of the game went back and forth between the two programs with the Yellowjackets pulling away with a 9-6 lead with 6:53 on the clock. Rochester followed with a 9-4 run to hold an 18-10 lead with just under three minutes left in the quarter. Loucopoulos ended the first quarter with a jump shot cutting into the Yellowjackets' lead, 19-12.
Rochester's offense exploded in the second quarter outscoring Emory 27-11. The first few points came from free throws before Loucopoulos and Kennedy landed a layup and free throw bringing the score to 26-19, Rochester advantage. The Eagles were scoreless for the next two minutes of the quarter with graduate student
McKenzi Carter breaking the drought with a free throw and a layup with 2:30 remaining in the quarter. She later landed another free throw but Rochester's offense continued rolling taking a 46-23 lead into the locker room.
Emory's defense was the highlight of the third quarter holding Rochester to just nine points in the third quarter. Teammates
Daniella Aronsky and
Katherine Martini opened the scoring in the third landing five points for the Eagles before graduate student
Hanna Malik sank the first three pointer of the day with 5:14 on the clock. The Yellowjackets landed a layup a few seconds later and were scoreless for the remainder of the quarter with Emory going on an 8-0 run to end the third.
The fourth quarter was another close matchup with Rochester just outscoring the Eagles. Loucopoulos and Kennedy continued the scoring for Emory going toe-to-toe with the Yellowjackets. The Eagles were scoreless again until the 4:00 minute mark with Laudick breaking the drought with a jumper. Rochester finished the game with a slight 7-6 run taking the matchup 74-51.
The Eagles will hit the road next weekend to continue UAA play against the No. 1 ranked NYU Violets on Friday, January 17 and the Brandeis Judges on Sunday, January 19.
