Women’s Basketball Falls in Matchup with Top-Ranked NYU Violets, 83-52

The Emory University women's basketball team traveled to the Big Apple on Friday afternoon facing the No. 1 ranked and last year's national champion NYU Violets.

The Eagles hold an 8-5 record after the 83-52 loss while the Violets win their second conference win of the season after facing Brandeis last weekend. Emory was led by graduate student Hanna Malik who notched 15 points and five rebounds in the matchup followed by 10 points from sophomore Mary Mullinax. Fellow sophomore Emma Starr also posted a career-high five assists in the matchup.

The first quarter was a close matchup between the two programs with the Violets taking the slight 17-12 advantage. NYU opened with a 6-0 lead in the first two minutes before a layup from junior Katherine Martini broke the scoring drought with a layup at the 6:34 mark. Malik followed with five points bringing Emory within a one-point margin of the Violets. Emory was held scoreless again until points from Malik and junior Chloe Kreusser ended the quarter for the Eagles.

NYU's defense was able to hold Emory scoreless for the first three minutes of the second quarter with Kreusser landing a layup in the paint to start cutting back into the Violets' lead. Both teams went on an 8-8 run in the next five minutes of the quarter with NYU still holding onto a 30-22 lead. Emory was able to score another two points in the final minute but the Violets' offense helped them to a 15-point, 39-24 lead at the half.

Emory opened the second half with their best numbers scoring 20 points in the third quarter. The team was held scoreless again for the first few minutes with the Violets starting with an 8-2 run with 6:57 left on the clock. A number of different Eagles saw points in the middle of the third quarter with both teams going toe-to-toe on points. With NYU holding a 63-39 lead with 1:34 remaining in the quarter, Emory finished with a slight 5-4 advantage in the final few minutes of the quarter.

The fourth quarter was quiet on both sides of the court with the Violets just outscoring the Eagles, 16-8. The scoring for Emory came later in the quarter with four different Eagles taking points in the final minutes of the matchup.

The Eagles will continue their roadtrip on Sunday, January 19 in Waltham, Massachusetts where they will face the Brandeis Judges at 11:30 AM.
