Women’s Basketball Clinches Close Win Against Brandeis, 65-62, Sunday Afternoon

The Emory University women's basketball team clinched a close, 65-62 win against the Brandeis Judges on Sunday afternoon in Waltham, Massachusetts.
 
The Eagles improve to 9-5 on the season and pick up their first conference win of the year with the victory. Graduate student Hanna Malik continued her offensive streak this weekend posting 19 points in the matchup with four landed threes and shooting 5-7 at the line. Senior Morgan Laudick follower with 13 points and seven rebounds shooting 6-10 from the field.
 
The first three minutes of the first quarter were a back and forth battle between the two programs with the Judges pulling away with an 8-4 lead. The Judges then followed with an 11-7 run to hold an eight points lead with 3:55 remaining in the quarter. Malik and senior Daniella Aronsky followed with free throws and a three pointer before sophomore Alexandra Loucopoulos ended the quarter with free throws bringing the score to 28-21 with Brandeis holding a slight lead.
 
Laudick and sophomore Emma Starr opened the second quarter with four points in the paint to continue cutting into the Judges' lead with Emory's defense holding Brandeis to just two points in the first five minutes. The rest of the quarter was all Eagles' offense going on a slight 11-9 run highlighted by points from senior Erin Martin and Loucopoulos trailing the Judges' by three at half.
 
Emory was able to outscore Brandeis 20-12 in the third quarter to reclaim the lead. The Eagles tied the matchup at 40 apiece at the 7:39 minute mark before Malik and Laudick landed back to back three pointers to hold a 46-40 lead. Malik continued the three-pointer run helping the Eagles to a 53-40 lead with 4:48 remaining in the quarter. The Judges were looking for a comeback scoring 10 more points in the next four minutes but Emory's offense continued to battle taking a 56-51 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Laudick started the fourth quarter with four points for the Eagles followed by a layup from graduate student McKenzi Carter giving Emory a 62-53 advantage with 5:41 remaining in the game. The Judges fought their way back to tie the game at 62-62 with just over a minute on the clock. Three free throws from the Eagles in the final minute were enough to secure the first conference win for the Eagles taking the matchup 65-62.
 
The Eagles will return to Atlanta on Friday, January 24 for a ranked matchup against the No. 24 ranked Chicago Maroons at 7:30 pm.
