Behind a career-high 17 points from junior
Lily Kennedy, the Emory University women's basketball team dominated the Piedmont University Lions, 100-57, on Thursday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Eagles improve to 7-3 on the season and the 100 points scored is just the fifth time in program history that the mark has been achieved, the first time since the 2016-17 season. Kennedy beat her previous career high of 12 points with her 17 points including a perfect 3-3 mark from beyond the arc. Following her were teammates
Hanna Malik who shot 3-6 from three for 15 points and
Alexandra Loucopoulos with 14 points.
Emory's defense was on the ball in the matchup holding the Lions 0-15 from three and 34.8% from the field. The Eagles had one of their best shooting games this season shooting 53.4 percent from the field and 52.2 percent from beyond the arc.
After Emory opened with a 7-2 lead, Piedmont looked to take advantage of free throws cutting back into the Eagles' lead. With a slight 11-8 lead with just over five minutes on the clock, Emory was held scoreless for the next two minutes before Kennedy broke the scoreless run with her first three pointer of the night. Three free throws from Malik in the last four seconds gave the Eagles a 21-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Eagles' offense exploded in the second quarter scoring 29 points to tie the fifth most points in a quarter in program history. Malik opened the quarter with a three pointer but Emory was scoreless for the next four minutes before a tip in from junior
Katherine Martini broke the scoreless run. Loucopoulos landed a jump shot at the 4:01 minute mark for a 10-point lead. Four of the next six baskets for the Eagles were three pointers with sophomore
Emma Starr hitting a three at the buzzer to give Emory a 50-27 lead heading into the locker room.
Piedmont looked to outscore the Eagles coming out of the break but were keeping up with Emory for the first five minutes of the third quarter. Kennedy sank another three with 4:23 remaining on the clock for a 24-point lead, the biggest of the night before both programs saw points heading into the final few seconds. With both teams at 21 points in the quarter, Malik drained another three at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 74-48 advantage.
The fourth quarter was no different for Emory outscoring Piedmont 26-9 in the quarter with a multitude of Eagles scoring points. Loucopoulos opened the quarter with eight straight points on layups before teammates
Mary Mullinax and
Chloe Kreusser landed back to back points in the paint for an 85-52 lead with 5:07 on the clock. Emory followed with a 13-5 run for a 98-57 advantage with 11 seconds on the clock before sophomore
Caroline Connelly scored the 100
th point of the game with two seconds on the clock.
The Eagles will return to the court on Sunday, January 5 to face the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels at 2:00 PM at Oglethorpe.
