The Emory University men's soccer team picked up its third win of the season Wednesday night, defeating the Sewanee Tigers 2-0 at Puett Field in Sewanee, Tennessee. Graduate student Ryan Winkler recorded his first career brace as the Eagles improved to 3-3-1 and dropped Sewanee to 1-4-2.
Winkler scored his first goal of the night in the early stages as heavy attacking pressure led to the goal in the 11th minute. Consecutive passes from sophomore Lorenzo Avalos and junior Josh Grand helped set up Winkler to find the back of the net.
Freshman Jake Breitegan provided the Eagles' next best scoring threat with 10 minutes remaining in the half as his shot attempt nearly missed drawing iron on the far post.
The defense also set the tone on the evening, holding the Tigers to just one shot in the first half as the Eagles led 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, Emory put forth several chances following the return to play with Avalos notably cracking a shot to the near post but was denied by a nice stop by the Sewanee keeper.
On the Eagles' third opportunity of the half, Winkler and Grand linked up again to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Grand lifted a shot into the six-yard box with Grand there to head it into the back corner at the 60:06 mark. The goal was Winkler's team-leading fourth of the season while the assist marked Grand's fifth of the year, establishing a new career-high.
Shot distribution was more even across the final 45 minutes with Emory leading 7-5 and 3-1 in shots on goal but the Eagles' backline stayed firm to collect their first clean sheet of the season.
Emory will continue its non-conference road swing on Saturday with a meeting against Covenant College. Kick off is set for 7:00 PM on Lookout Mountain.
