The Emory University men's soccer team fell on the road Saturday night as Covenant College took down the Eagles, 1-0, in front of their Homecoming crowd at Scotland Yard on Lookout Mountain, Georgia.
The two sides were locked in a scoreless battle until the closing moments when the Scots scored the go-ahead goal with 3:56 remaining in the game. With the win, Covenant improves to 6-2-1 while the Eagles slip to 3-4-1.
Emory won the shot counter on the evening, 18-10, and recorded five more shots on goal at 7-2. The Eagles drew five more corner kicks as well, finishing with an 8-3 total.
One of Emory's best chances came right before the Scots scored the game winner as senior Ryan Hayes played a shot to the right post but his attempt clanked off the post.
Moments later, Covenant's Whitt Tisdale provided Kade Theunissen with a great touch base that allowed him to get behind the Emory defense. Theunissen then was able to beat junior keeper Keirnan Skelly one-on-one from 15 yards out.
Following a hard tackle that resulted in a yellow card, the Eagles one last opportunity to capitalize with a free kick with 15 seconds remaining. Junior Josh Grand's shot to the top right corner sailed out of play, allowing time to expire.
Grand and graduate student Ryan Winkler combined for seven of the team's 18 shots with Winkler contributing three shots on frame.
The Eagles look to rebound on Wednesday with a NCAA first round rematch against Brevard College. Kick off from Brevard is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
