The Emory University women's basketball program finished their two-game stint at Rhodes College with an 80-44 win over the Lynx on Sunday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Eagles improve to 5-2 on the season and pick up their fourth road win of the year. Graduate student
Hanna Malik dominated the floor posting 19 points in the victory while shooting 50.0% from beyond the arch. Senior
Morgan Laudick followed with 13 points and led the team alongside graduate student
McKenzi Carter with eight rebounds each.
Rhodes started the matchup with the lead going on an 8-5 run before a three pointer from Malik tied the game at eight apiece. The next few minutes saw points on both sides of the court with Emory pulling away with an 18-16 advantage with 3:40 left in the quarter. The Eagles finished the first quarter with a 7-2 run to take a 25-18 lead.
Emory was able to hold Rhodes scoreless in the first two and a half minutes of the second quarter while the Eagles took their biggest lead of the matchup at 36-20 after a three pointer from sophomore
Alexandra Loucopoulos. Malik and sophomore
Emma Starr continued the scoring leading Emory to a 46-27 advantage with 1:14 remaining in the half. The Lynx ended the quarter with a jumper for a 46-29 lead for the Eagles heading into the locker room.
The Eagles opened the third quarter strong with Loucopoulos landing back to back free throws at the 7:32 mark to take a 20-point, 51-31 lead. The Lynx continued to fight back keeping Emory within a 20-point margin with 2:20 remaining on the clock. The next two minutes were scoreless on both sides of the court until senior
Erin Martin posted two free throws in the last 20 seconds giving the Eagles a 60-38 advantage after three quarters.
Laudick and junior
Katherine Martini started the fourth quarter with six straight points for the Eagles helping Emory to a 29-point lead with 6:55 remaining in the game. Malik and Carter followed with five more points to help the Eagles with a 73-42 lead with just over five minutes. Emory finished the game with a 7-2 run highlighted by five points from junior
Lily Kennedy.
The Eagles will return to the court after winter break to compete in the St. Petersburg Classic and will face Husson University on December 29 at 5:00 PM.
