Women’s Basketball Opens St. Petersburg Classic with 90-43 Defeat of Husson

The Emory women's basketball program picked up its sixth win of the 2024-25 season and returned to the court after winter break to a 90-43 win over the Husson Unversity Eagles on Sunday afternoon on the first day of the St. Petersburg Classic.
 
The Eagles now hold a 6-2 record and have won four of their last five matchups. Graduate student Hanna Malik led Emory offensively with 16 points while going 6-13 from the field. Sophomores Alexandra Loucopoulos and Mary Mullinax followed with 13 points each while junior Chloe Kreusser led the team with eight rebounds.
 
Husson opened the first quarter with an 8-4 lead before back to back layups from Loucopoulos tied the matchup at eight apiece with 7:26 left on the clock. Senior Daniella Aronsky followed with a three pointer reclaiming the lead for Emory. Husson was held scoreless by the Emory defense for the next four minutes while Emory took a 15-8 lead. Husson looked for a comeback taking a 16-15 lead but Malik ended the quarter with a layup to reclaim a one-point lead.
 
Malik dominated the start of the second quarter scoring six points in the first two minutes broadening Emory's lead to three. Mullinax and Aronsky both later scored points for the Eagles helping them to a 31-24 lead with 3:55 remaining in the half. Emory took advantage of free throws at the end of the half to broaden their lead to 37-26 heading into the locker room.
 
Husson opened the first minute of the second half with back to back turnovers while Loucopoulos and Malik scored four points off of those turnovers. Senior Morgan Laudick entered the scoring run going back and forth with Malik to help the Eagles to a 19-point, 53-34 advantage with 4:46 remaining in the third quarter. Kreusser and graduate student McKenzi Carter finished the quarter with back to back layups for Emory's biggest lead of the afternoon at 61-36.
 
Emory dominated the final quarter of the game outscoring Husson 29-7, Emory's highest scoring quarter of the day. Husson was held scoreless again until the 6:38 minute mark while Emory dominated the court taking a 35-point lead. Mullinax dominated the final three minutes for the Eagles posting eight straight points to push Emory to 90 points while Husson finished the day with a three pointer falling 90-43.
 
The Eagles will return to the court on Monday, December 30 to face the No. 6 ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears in the final matchup of the St. Petersburg Classic.
