Laudick Goes for Double-Double in Women’s Basketball’s 53-48 Win over Belhaven

The Emory University women's basketball program secured their third win of the season with a 53-48 defeat of the Belhaven Blazers on Saturday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi.
 
The Eagles now sit 3-1 on the season after winning their second road matchup of the season. Senior Morgan Laudick continues her impressive start to the season notching 11 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Tulane transfer McKenzi Carter paced the team with 12 points going 10-15 in free throws on the day.
 
The Eagles were held scoreless in the first four minutes of the first quarter with sophomore Mary Mullinax opening things with a three pointer. Emory then notched six straight points to hold a 9-4 lead over the Blazers with 3:50 left on the clock. Mullinax continued the scoring for Emory with back-to-back layups helping the Eagles to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter.
 
The second quarter was all about the defense with Emory being able to outscore Belhaven 9-6 in the quarter. Laudick opened the quarter with a jump shot to help the Eagles to a six-point lead, the biggest lead so far, but Belhaven responded with a jumper of their own with 5:39 remaining in the half. Junior Katherine Martini entered the scoring for Emory posting three straight points to give the Eagles an 18-11 advantage. Both teams finished the quarter with a 4-4 run with Emory holding the 22-15 lead at the half.
 
Emory was able to take advantage of free throws in the third quarter, but Belhaven outscored the Eagles 17-13, their first of the matchup. Martini opened the scoring for Emory in the third before four straight points from Carter gave the Eagles a 28-20 lead. Carter and Martini went back and forth scoring before a jumper from Laudick finished the quarter as the Blazers cut into the lead, 35-32.
 
Belhaven took their second lead of the match to start the fourth quarter opening with eight straight points to hold a 40-35 advantage in the first two minutes. Graduate student Hanna Malik responded with five points including her first three pointer of the game to reclaim the lead for Emory with 5:18 left on the clock. The Eagles were able to take back the lead and finished the fourth quarter with a 12-8 run to clinch the 53-48 win.
 
The Eagles will stay in Jackson, Mississippi to face Millsaps College on Sunday, November 24 at 2:00 PM.
