The Emory University women's basketball program returned to Atlanta for their first home game of the 2024-25 season where they faced the No. 7 ranked Washington & Lee Generals.
The Eagles now sit 1-1 to open the season after dropping a close matchup against the Generals to open the annual Emory Tip Off Classic on Saturday afternoon. Emory was able to outshoot the Generals from beyond the arch going 9-27 (33.3%) in three pointers while Wash & Lee were able to take advantage of a 43.1 field goal percentage.
Emory was led offensively by sophomore
Alexandra Loucopoulos who totaled 19 points on the day and shot 70.0 from inside the line. Another Eagle with an impressive day was senior
Daniella Aronsky who notched a double-double with 15 points and 11 assists. Graduate student and former General
Hanna Malik made a statement in her first game in Atlanta posting 15 points and going 3-4 at the line.
Aronsky and Malik started strong opening with three back-to-back threes to help Emory hold a slight 9-8 lead to open the first four minutes of the quarter. From there, the two teams went toe-to-toe for the next few points seeing five more ties to end the quarter at 20 apiece.
The two teams continued on both sides of the court with the Generals holding a slight 30-27 lead after another three pointer from Aronsky cut into the score. The next two minutes were scoreless until the Eagles went on a 12-6 run at the end of the second quarter highlighted by baskets from Loucopoulos and fellow sophomore
Mary Mullinax. The run gave the Eagles momentum and helped them to a 39-36 advantage heading into the locker room at the half.
Emory took one of their biggest leads of the matchup four minutes into the third quarter posting a nine-point, 51-42 lead thanks to continuous scoring from Malik and Aronsky. The momentum continued with Loucopoulos landing a layup with 3:19 left on the clock broadening the Eagles' lead to 10 points. The Generals answered with a scoring run of their own cutting Emory's lead to 64-60 to finish the third quarter.
The Generals were able to outscore Emory in the fourth quarter 24-15, the first of the matchup. Wash & Lee started the quarter with a pair of free throws in the first minute and a half before the next two and a half minutes went scoreless on both sides of the court. Later in the quarter with 2:54 left on the clock, the Generals were able to reclaim the lead from the Eagles and held onto it to the end of the game.
The Eagles will return to the court on Sunday, November 17 to face Oberlin College at 3:00 PM on the second day of the Emory Tip Off Classic.
