Second Half Flurry Pushes Men’s Soccer Past WashU, 5-2

The Emory University men's soccer program opened University Athletic Association conference play on Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over the WashU Bears in front of a packed crowd in Atlanta, Georgia.

After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Eagles saw a string of second half goals, including three in a four-minute period, to help boost them to their first UAA victory of the season. Emory was also able to out-shoot the Bears, 19-13, and added six corner kicks to the box score as well.

The two teams were locked in a scoreless battle through the first half before WashU's Zach Susee connected on a free kick in the 42nd minute helping the Bears to a 1-0 lead heading into the half.

Out of the break, the momentum was high for Emory outscoring WashU 5-1 in the second half. The first goal came after a shot from graduate student Ryan Winkler was initially saved by the Bears' goalie but was then deflected into the net off a WashU defender in the 56th minute. Nine minutes later, junior Josh Grand netted his third goal of the season after connecting with senior Juan Figueroa.

Freshman Jake Breitegan continued the scoring in the 68th minute finding Winkler who scored his second of goal of the game with a straight shot into the net. WashU's Jamie Lee followed kickoff with an unassisted goal in the 69th minute to make it 4-2 Eagles.

Breitegan finished things out for the Eagles syncing up with sophomore Lorenzo Avalos for the fifth and final goal of the game in the 72nd minute. Grand added an assist on the goal.

Emory will look to continue the conference momentum when they return to the WoodPEC next Sunday, October 13 to face the Case Western Reserve University Spartans at 1:30 PM.
