Men's Soccer Drops Case Western Reserve, 2-0

The Emory University men's soccer team stayed unbeaten in University Athletic Association competition following a 2-0 victory over Case Western Reserve Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia.

With the win, the Eagles now stand atop of the UAA standings through two conference games and are one of two teams with 2-0 marks. Emory evens its overall record at 5-5-1 and drops the Spartans to 5-3-3 (0-1-1 UAA).

The Eagles scored in both halves and outshot CWRU 15-7, including an 8-4 margin in shots on goal. Junior Keirnan Skelly matched a season-high with four saves as he recorded his second clean sheet of the campaign.

Graduate student Ryan Winkler opened the scoring in the 27th minute as he netted his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Sophomore Lorenzo Avalos had the diagonal cross to Winkler on the left side of the six-yard box where he tapped a rainbow shot over the keeper's head.

The score remained 1-0 until the closing minutes when senior Ryan Hayes doubled the Emory lead in the 87th minute with his third goal of the year. Junior Josh Grand initially had an attempt on frame but was turned away by the CWRU keeper. The rebound found Hayes in the middle of the box where he went top shelf for the goal.

Emory will now turn its attention to next Saturday, October 19 as the Eagles travel to Pittsburgh for a meeting with Carnegie Mellon University at 1:30 PM.
