Volleyball Completes Sunday Sweep at Second UAA Round Robin

The Emory University volleyball program won its 12th straight match this season after taking 3-1 wins against the Carnegie Mellon Tartans and the Chicago Maroons on Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri.
 
The Eagles improve to 16-1 on the season and most to 5-0 in conference play following the two wins on Sunday. Junior Kate Larocco continued her momentum on offense posting 31 kills on the day including 16 against Chicago. Sophomore Sophia Luo had an impressive day notching 23 total kills including a career-high 17 against Carnegie Mellon.
 
Game 1: Emory 3, Carnegie Mellon 1
 
 The Eagles came out swinging in the first set taking an early 6-1 lead before going on a slight 4-3 run to reach the 10-point mark. The momentum continued for Emory posting seven straight points to hold an 18-5 advantage towards the end of the set. The Tartans weren't done yet going on an 8-4 run to cut the Eagles' lead to nine but the movement fell short and the Eagles took set one 25-15.
 
 The second set was a tight matchup but Emory struck first with a 6-1 lead. Both teams continued back and forth and the Eagles were able to keep a hold on the lead until Carnegie Mellon tied the match at 15 points apiece. Emory later took the advantage back holding a two-point, 23-21 lead highlighted by kills from LaRocco and Luo. The Tartans finished the set with an 8-4 run to take set two with a 29-27 line.
 
Despite falling in the second set, the Eagles continued strong into the third set not allowing the Tartans to take the lead. After a 5-1 start, Emory went on a 8-5 run highlighted by kills from Luo and senior Alana Dawson to hold a 13-6 advantage. Carnegie Mellon later looked for a comeback cutting Emory's lead to four but the Eagles finished the set with four kills to take the third set 25-17.
 
Set four was another close battle seeing a tie at seven points apiece to start the set. Dawson continued the momentum posting three more kills later helping the Eagles to an 18-12 lead. The Tartans continued trying to close the gap cutting Emory's lead to 20-17 but the Eagles finished with a 5-2 run to clinch the set and the match with a 25-19 line.
 
Game 2: Emory 3, Chicago 1
 
Following their win against Rochester, the Maroons looked to continue their momentum into the first set against the Eagles. After falling 7-4 to open the set, the Eagles fought back to cut Chicago's lead to 10-9 before later tying the set at 14 apiece. The end of the set saw three more ties but the Maroons were able to finish the first set with a 25-22 win.
 
The Eagles came back strong in the second set holding a slight 10-7 advantage to start the set. Chicago looked to make a comeback but kills from senior Madison Cail and Luo allowed Emory to keep a hold on the lead before later taking a five-point, 19-14 lead. The Maroons posted two more points in the set but the Eagles' offense was unstoppable tying the match with a 25-16 set win.
 
The third set was intense on both sides of the net with each team going back and forth to post a 9-9 tie to start the set. Emory followed with five straight points forcing a timeout from Chicago's bench but the momentum continued from the Eagles later taking a 20-15 lead before the Maroons took another timeout. Chicago finished the set with a 5-4 run but Emory was still able to clinch the set with a 25-20 line.
 
The beginning of the fourth set was a back and forth battle on both sides of the net after the Eagles opened with five straight points. The Maroons came back to take a slight 10-9 advantage towards the middle of the set before later taking a 17-13 lead. Emory answered with an 8-1 run to post a 21-18 advantage. Chicago was able to notch three more points in the set but the momentum fell short and the Eagles took the set with a 25-21 score.
 
The Eagles will return to Atlanta after being on the road for over a month where they will face the Berry College Vikings at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 19.
