The Emory University volleyball program returned to the WoodPEC on Saturday afternoon winning its 13
th straight match after defeating the Berry College Vikings, 3-0.
The Eagles improve to 17-1 on the season, the second straight season with a 17-1 start after 18 matches, and improve to 4-0 at home with their 13
th straight win. Before the match, senior
Sarah Luong was recognized for reaching 1,000 career assists last season against the Covenant Scots.
Offensively, the Eagles were led by sophomore
Sophia Luo and senior
Alana Dawson who posted 13 and 10 kills respectively. Luong and junior
Olivia Rabinowitz totaled 39 assists between them while senior
Deborah Hong posted 15 digs in the win.
In the first set, the Vikings opened strong taking the first three points before a kill from junior
Kate LaRocco gave the Eagles their first point of the match. The scoring continued on both sides of the net but Berry was able to keep a slight advantage throughout the first part of the set. After Berry took a 9-8 lead, The Eagles went on a 10-9 run to tie the set at 18 apiece. The end of the set saw four more ties before kills from Luo and senior
Madison Cail clinched the set for Emory, 25-23.
The Vikings struck first again in the second set taking a 6-3 lead but Emory answered with five straight points to take the advantage from Berry. The two teams went back and forth with both teams holding the lead at some point. Towards the middle of the set, the Eagles were able to come back and tie the set at 15 apiece before going on a 5-2 run to take a 10-17 lead highlighted by kills from Dawson. The Vikings looked for another comeback at the end of the set reaching 22 points but the effort wasn't enough and the Eagles took the set with a 25-22 line.
Emory was able to strike first in the third set opening with three straight kills from Luo and Cail before the Vikings answered with three points of their own to tie the set. The Eagles followed with a 7-2 run to take a 10-5 advantage taking advantage of attack errors from Berry. Once again, the Vikings were looking for a comeback cutting Emory's lead to 12-11 but the Eagles were able to pull away again to a 16-12 lead. The end of the set was back and forth between the two teams but Emory clinched the win with a 25-19 win in the third set.
The Eagles will return to the court on Sunday, October 27 facing Brandeis and NYU in the third and final UAA Round Robin of the season in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
