Women's Tennis Downs Chicago, 5-1, to Advance to 10th Straight NCAA Semifinals

The No.-1 ranked Emory University Women's Tennis team is headed to its 10th consecutive NCAA Division III Semifinals and 19th overall in program history following a 5-1 decision over the University of Chicago Monday evening at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, California.

The Eagles, now 16-4 on the season, advance to face Middlebury College in the Final Four Tuesday afternoon, beginning at 6:00 PM EST. The Panthers improved to 17-3 with a 5-2 win over Wesleyan on Monday.

Emory registered wins on two of the three doubles courts to lead off the match with a 2-1 advantage over the Maroons. Junior Daniela Lopez and freshman Katie Chang notched an 8-2 decision at third doubles before senior Anna Fuhr and freshman Stephanie Taylor added an 8-4 win at second doubles. Senior Bridget Harding and freshman Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico saw their 19-match win streak come to an end on court one, falling to UC, 9-7.

In singles action, the Eagles collected wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles to clinch the match. Taylor and classmate Defne Olcay each posted 6-2, 6-0 victories on courts four and five before sophomore Emma Perelman recorded the match point on court six with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph.

At the conclusion of the match, Gonzalez-Rico was in front at first singles 6-1, 3-4 while Harding was tied at second singles at one set a piece (2-6, 6-4). At third singles, Lopez was leading her Chicago counterpart 4-3 in the second after dropping the first set 6-1.
