Jackson Weeg Records 300th Strikeout as Rowan Tops Emory Baseball in NCAA Opener

Box Score

The Emory University Baseball team opened the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships Thursday night, falling to Rowan University, 10-2, in the first game of the double-elimination tournament in Danville, Virginia.

The Eagles will now face Roanoke College tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 PM at Legion Field. The Maroons were victorious in their first contest of the South Regional Thursday, upsetting top-seeded Salisbury University by a 15-5 margin.

Junior Bubby Terp went 2-for-3 with a RBI with senior Brian Hernandez adding a 1-for-4 effort and a RBI to lead the Emory offense. Senior Wilson Morgan chipped in with two hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Senior Jackson Weeg allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits and one walk in four innings before leaving the game due to an injury. He struck out six Profs in the outing to join Mike Garvis as the only Emory pitchers to record 300 strikeouts in a career. Weeg now has 305 in his career, nine shy of tying Garvis's program record.

Rowan's Andrew Cohen was dialed in on the mound, tossing eight strong innings to improve to 5-4. He allowed two runs, both unearned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out 14 batters.

The Eagles struck first, pushing across a run in the top of the first on a RBI groundout by Hernandez. The Profs answered with single runs in their first three innings at the plate.

Emory cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth inning as Terp brought home senior Jeff Ronpirin with a single through the right side.

After Rowan increased their lead to 4-2 in the seventh, the Eagles brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the eighth following back-to-back one out singles by Hernandez and Terp. However, Cohen sent down senior Philip Maldari and sophomore David Draper on strikeouts to escape the threat.

Rowan busted open the game in the eighth, scoring six times including an inside-the park grand slam by Monny Strickland Strickland finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate with a game-high five RBI.
