Box Score The Emory University Baseball team improved to 16-2 on the season following a 4-1 victory at Birmingham-Southern College in a showdown between top-five programs.
Senior Jackson Weeg blanked the 4th-ranked Panthers across seven dominant innings to record his third win of the season, moving into sixth place on the Emory all-time list with 26 career victories. Weeg allowed just three runners to reach scoring position in the outing to go along with seven strikeouts. He gave up three hits and one free pass.
The Eagles did all of their offensive damage in the fourth inning. Senior Jeff Ronpirin doubled home classmate Wilson Morgan to begin the scoring. Senior Brian Hernandez made it 2-0 Emory as he brought in Ronpirin on a ground out to short. Junior Nick Chambers and sophomore David Draper then picked up back-to-back singles to plate junior Bubby Terp and senior Chris Young as the Eagles tacked on two more runs to move in front 4-0.
The Eagles maintained a four-run advantage until the bottom of the ninth when Birmingham-Southern scraped across one run due to an Emory fielding error. The Panthers had the bases loaded with just one out but senior closer Kyle Monk forced Will Toner to ground into 1-2-3 double play to end the contest. The save was Monk's fourth of the season and 33rd of his career, moving the Cortlandt Manor, NY native into sole possession of fifth place on the NCAA Division III all-time list.
Emory is back in action Friday afternoon as they host Covenant College in the first game of a three-game set. First pitch from Chappell Park is set for 3:00 PM.
