The Emory University Baseball team took both games of the doubleheader against Sewanee University on Sunday afternoon to conclude the opening weekend of the 2017 season with a perfect 3-0 record.

Sophomore Billy Dimlow and senior Kyle Monk combined for a three-hit shutout in game one as the Eagles blanked the Tigers 3-0. Dimlow set a career-high in strikeouts with 12 meanwhile Monk became the sixth player in NCAA Division III history to reach the 30 saves mark in a career.

In the second contest, the Emory offense racked up eight runs on 17 hits while senior Luke Emmett picked up his first win of the year with freshman Richard Brereton earning his first save as the Eagles finished the three-game sweep with an 8-4 victory.

Game One – Emory 3, Sewanee 0

Dimlow was in complete control in his season debut, allowing just two hits in seven superb innings of work to go along with a dozen strikeouts. He did not allow a single baserunner to reach until two outs in the fourth inning, retiring the first 11 Sewanee hitters.

Dimlow's strikeout total marked a new career-high, surpassing his previous best of eight which he set against Birmingham-Southern last April. It was the first time since Connor Dillman in April of 2014 that an Eagle pitcher had that many K's in a single outing.

Monk entered in the top of the eighth to close the door on the three-run win. He allowed one hit, one walk in two scoreless innings and struck out a pair. With the save, he moved into sole possession of sixth place all-time on the Division III leaderboard in career saves.

Senior Philip Maldari broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with a single to center to plate classmate Jeff Ronpirin from second. The Eagles tacked on two more in the seventh with an RBI single by sophomore NJ Kim followed by a run-scoring single by senior Wilson Morgan. Maldari and Kim both collected two hits apiece to lead the Eagles offense.

Game Two – Emory 8, Sewanee 4

Nine different Emory hitters picked up a base hit with five Eagles recording at least base knocks as Emory posted season-highs in both runs and hits to complete the sweep over Sewanee.

Emmett twirled five innings to earn the victory, allowing three runs (2 ER) on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Junior Rhett Stuart saw his first action of the season, going 1.2 innings of one run ball.

Freshman Richard Brereton came on in relief in the top of the seventh after Stuart departed with runners on first and second with two outs with the score at 6-4 in favor of the Eagles. Brereton was able to escape the jam, getting Tyler Minkkinen to fly out to right. He allowed just one baserunner over the final two frames, a two-out single in the ninth, to record his first career save in an Emory uniform.

At the dish, the Eagles jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage after just two innings. Senior Brian Hernandez got Emory on the board in the first inning with a run-scoring single to plate classmate Chris Young. Hernandez added another RBI in the second with sophomore David Draper, Morgan, and freshman Christopher Stern collected RBI as well in the frame as the Eagles tacked on four more to their ledger.

After Sewanee cut the lead to 5-3 with two runs in the third and another in the fourth, sophomore Eric Terry drove in junior Nick Chambers with a pinch-hit sac fly.

The Tigers added one more in the seventh before Emory put the game away with two of its own in the bottom half of the inning with a sac fly by sophomore Jackson Grayson with junior Bubby Terp scoring on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

Hernandez, Chambers and Draper all registered three hits each to pace the offense. Young and Morgan each had two hits of their own for the Eagles.

Emory continues its seven-game home stand on Wednesday afternoon as in-state foe Berry College makes the tip down to Atlanta. First pitch from Chappell Park is set for 2:00 PM.
