Emory Wins UAA Opener Behind Weeg's Gem

The third-ranked Emory University baseball team opened up the 2016 UAA championships with a 3-1 win over Washington University on Sunday afternoon at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Fla. The win extended the Eagles win streak to eight games and our now 11-2 on the season while the Bears dropped to 6-3.

Junior Jackson Weeg was superb, twirling a career-long 8.2 innings gem to pick up his fourth win of the season. Weeg, now 4-0 in 2016, allowed one run on five hits and struck out six in the outing. Classmate Kyle Monk finished the game, coming in to record the final out via strikeout to earn his NCAA leading sixth save of the year.

Junior Philip Maldari had two two-out RBI singles as he led the Emory offense on the afternoon. Junior Wilson Morgan ran his hitting streak to six games with a 3-for-4 effort and senior David Coble added two hits for the Eagles.

Maldari got the Eagles off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a single to left which brought home Morgan. Maldari doubled the Emory lead to 2-0 in the third inning as he singled to right to plate Brian Hernandez. After WashU cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth, senior Dylan Eisner got the run right back for the Blue and Gold in the bottom of the fifth as he brought home sophomore Nick Chambers from third on a fielder's choice.

Emory will face Case Western Reserve (4-4) tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 PM in a dual of a 1-0 teams in UAA play. The Spartans were 6-3 winners over Brandeis in the first game on Sunday.
