Box Score Juniors Jackson Weeg and Kyle Monk held the highest scoring offense in the country to just one run on six hits as the #3 Emory University baseball program defeated the Huntingdon College Hawks 4-1 on Friday night. With the win, the Eagles moved to 7-2 while the Hawks dropped to 8-3.
Weeg worked 6.2 innings to pick up his third win of the season. The southpaw allowed 10 baserunners on six hits and four walks but forced 12 groundball outs keep the damage to a minimum. He added three strikeouts in the outing. Monk threw 2.1 hitless innings to earn his third save in 2016 and his second of two innings or more. He walked two and had three punch outs.
At the plate, junior Chris Young went 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead the Eagles. He began the scoring as he reached on a liner off the pitcher in the second inning. Classmate Philip Maldari came in from third on the play to make it 1-0 Emory.
Huntingdon later tied it up in the bottom of the fifth as Alec Spivey grounded out to third to score Landon Sessions.
The Eagles regained the lead in the sixth as senior Dylan Eisner and junior Brian Hernandez had back-to-back RBI singles to put Emory ahead 3-1.
Senior Ben Vizvary tacked on another run in the top half of the ninth with a looping liner to right to plate junior Wilson Morgan.
Monk tossed a 1-2-3 ninth including two of his three strikeouts to seal the deal for Emory.
The two teams continue their three game series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM EST.
