Box Score Junior Khadijah Sayyid and sophomore Shellie Kaniut combined for 40 points but it wasn't enough as the Emory women's basketball team fell to the University of Rochester in its final game of the season. The Eagles saw their record fall to 12-13 overall, 4-10 in the University Athletic Association, following a 74-64 setback to the Yellowjackets who raised their overall mark to 15-10, 7-7 in the conference.
Sayyid paced all players with 21 points, sinking eight-of-17 from the floor, including three-of-eight from three-point range, in posting her seventh contest of 20 or more points this season. Kaniut totaled 19 points, her high for a conference game this season and second-highest career total, also converting eight field goals in 17 attempts, including a pair of triples in six tries. Kaniut also topped the squad with eight rebounds. Sophomore Fran Sweeney rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 11 points.
After trailing by eight points at halftime, the Eagles faced a six-point gap with 13:52 left in the game before rattling off an 11-3 spurt, which saw Sweeney sink a pair of treys and Kaniut add five points, that put them ahead by a 52-50 margin with 11:06 remaining. Emory trailed by two points with 4:28 on the clock after a bucket by junior Sarah Arington, but a 7-1 Yellowjackets' run pushed them to an eight-point lead . A three pointer by Sayyid with 43 ticks on the clock kept Emory alive but it wasn't able to muster any further scoring while UR scored its final five points from the charity stripe.
Rochester hit on 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the floor and was led in scoring by sophomore Alexandra Leslie's 19 points. Ally Zywicki chipped in 13 points and seven assists. The Eagles converted 29.8 percent (25-of-84) from the field and eight three pointers in 27 opportunities. Emory did force 24 UR turnovers with Sayyid and junior Ilene Tsao each registering four steals. Sayyid concluded the year with 65 steals, good for fifth place on the program's seasonal chart.
The Eagles trailed at the half by a 35-27 score as the Yellowjackets were successful on 50 percent (13-of-26) of their field goal attempts. After facing a 14-7 deficit with 13:35 left in the stanza, Emory fought back to knot the score at 24-24 with 6:22 on the clock after Kaniut converted a basket off her steal. UR then responded with an 11-3 run over the remainder of the stanza, capped by a three pointer by Zywicki with just two seconds left, to take the eight-point cushion into the break.
