Emory Women's Basketball Tops Carnegie Mellon

Box Score

Sophomore Michelle Bevan and freshman Dumebi Egbuna each scored a career-high 15 points in leading the Emory women's basketball team to a Sunday afternoon home win over Carnegie Mellon University.  The Eagles raised their overall record to 10-6, 2-3 in the University Athletic Association, following a 62-57 decision over the Tartans who slipped to 10-5 overall, 2-3 in the league.

Emory led by an 11-point margin, 45-34, with 12:03 left in the game following a bucket by Egbuna, but CMU clawed back to within two points with 7:37 on the clock after Zoe Zawisa knocked down a three pointer.  Emory was still nursing a two-point advantage when Bevan came through with a key basket on a drive that put the Eagles up by a 58-54 count with 51 ticks on the clock.  A pair of charity tosses by junior Ilene Tsao extended Emory's lead to six points before a triple by the Zawisa sliced Emory's lead to three points.  Two more makes from the line by Tsao with 18 remaining closed out the game's scoring.

Bevan ended the day sinking five-of-six from the floor along with all five of her free throw opportunities en route to her fifth double-figure effort of the campaign.  Egbuna was successful on five field goals in nine opportunities and converted five free throws in seven attempts in posting  her seventh double-figure performance of the season.  Egbuna also tied junior Khadijah Sayyid for the team lead with six rebounds.

Carnegie Mellon enjoyed a slight edge in field goal shooting, 40.7 percent (22-of-54) to Emory's 37.5 percent (21-of-56), and sank eight treys to the Eagles' three, but Emory harassed the Tartans into 24 turnovers that it generated into 20 points.   Sayyid came up with her fifth five-steal performance of the year that paced the Eagles while Egbuna registered three thefts.   Emory picked an opportune time to shoot a season-high 81.0 percent from the foul line, knocking down 17-of-21, while the Tartans converted five-of-eight.

Emory trailed by a 22-18 margin with 4:30 left in the first half before closing out the stanza on an 11-0 charge.  Egbuna scored the first three points of the run from the foul line before junior Sarah Arington recorded back-to-back buckets.   After Bevan sank two from the line, a steal by Arington led to a buzzer-beating layup by Bevan that closed out the half and gave the Eagles a 29-22 edge at the break.

Emory returns to action on Friday, Jan. 30, when it plays at Brandeis.
