Box Score The Emory women's basketball team closed out its season Saturday by dropping a hard-fought road battle to the University of Rochester. The Eagles saw their record drop to 16-9, 5-9 in the University Athletic Association, after coming out on the short end of an 84-72 decision to the Yellowjackets who ended their season at 12-13 overall, 6-8 in the conference.
Pacing the Emory effort was senior Selena Castillo who recorded her first career double-double with a team-high 20 points to go with a career-high 11 rebounds. Castillo sank seven-of-19 from the field and all four of her free throw attempts in registering her fifth contest of 20 or more points this year. Castillo also established school career and seasonal records in steals with her four thefts upping her career total to 229, passing Amy Carter's (1993-97) standard of 228, while her 83 steals this year bettered her previous record of 80 set last year. Senior Savannah Morgan was the team's other double-figure scorer with 14 points while also dishing out four assists and contributing two steals. Morgan set the program record by appearing in her 103rd career contest this afternoon, one more than Mandy Jackson (1991-95) and Nytasha Thomas (1991-95).
Emory ended the game shooting 34.1 percent (29-of-85) from the floor while Rochester was successful on 50.9 percent (27-of-53) of its attempts. The Yellowjackets enjoyed a decided edge at the foul line, sinking 25-of-31 from the stripe compared to Emory's six makes in nine attempts. Rochester finished with a 50-34 edge in rebounding which helped negate its 26 turnovers that Emory parlayed into 24 points.
Rochester held a 40-34 lead at halftime and opened the second half on a 19-11 run that stretched its lead to 59-45 with 11:41 left in the game. The Eagles regrouped and countered with an 8-0 charge that saw Castillo score four points and senior Gabi Whitmer knock down one of her three treys of the day, to cut their deficit to six points. Emory was still within striking distance after a bucket by sophomore Ilene Tsao cut the Yellowjacket lead to seven points, 66-59, with 7:50 on the clock, but Rochester answered with a 13-6 spurt, eight points coming from Loren Wagner, to extend its advantage to 79-66 with 2:16 left. Wagner, playing in her final game for UR, finished the day with 23 points and 18 boards.
