The second-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis Team improved to 5-0 in 2014 with a pair of wins on Tuesday, defeating Georgia Gwinnett College 7-2 in the early affair, followed by a 9-0 shutout in the late contest.
Emory athletes also recorded 22 aces during the two matches, helping to raise money for cancer research through their special 'Aces for the Cure' day.
Emory sent previously undefeated Georgia Gwinnett College (7-1), an NAIA program, to its first loss of the season by taking two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles contests. After Georgia Gwinnett's Valeria Podda and Helena Korompis held strong with an 8-6 win over senior Gabrielle Clark and freshman Melissa Goodman at first doubles, Emory would take the next two matches, with junior Rebecca Siegler and sophomore Madison Gordon earning an 8-6 second doubles win, and senior Brenna Kelly and freshman Michelle Satterfield claiming an 8-3 victory at third doubles.
Georgia Gwinnett would once again claim a victory in the top position during singles play, with Podda besting Clark, 6-4, 6-0. However, the other five matches would all belong to Emory, with wins from sophomore Beatrice Rosen at second singles (6-0, 6-0), Satterfield at third singles (6-1, 6-4), Goodman at fourth singles (6-3, 6-0), Gordon at fifth singles (7-5, 6-4) and freshman Katarina Su at sixth singles (6-3, 4-6, ret.).
In the late match, the Eagles would sweep all three doubles matches over Oglethorpe University. At first doubles, it was Su and freshman Michelle DeMeo claiming an 8-3 win over their counterparts. The other two Emory doubles teams each recorded shutouts, with junior Danielle Truitt and freshman Bruna Correa winning 8-0 at second doubles, and junior Allie Damico and sophomore Marissa Levine claiming an 8-0 triumph at third doubles.
In singles play, earning wins for Emory were Su (6-3, 6-0) at first singles, sophomore Stephanie Loutsenko (6-2, 6-0) at second singles, junior Catharine Harris (6-1, 6-0) at third singles, Levine (6-2, 6-0) at fourth singles, Correa (6-0, 6-0) at fifth singles and DeMeo (6-0, 6-0) at sixth singles.
Tuesday's match was the season-opener for Oglethorpe, which fell to 0-1 on the season with the loss.
Emory will continue their stretch of seven matches in six days on Thursday, February 27th at 3:30 PM, when the Eagles will host Columbus State University, the fifth-ranked team in Division II.
