Box Score Senior Selena Castillo scored a career-high tying 26 points and the No. 8-ranked Emory women's basketball team remained undefeated following a Sunday afternoon victory over Case Western Reserve University. The Eagles raised their overall record to 14-0, 3-0 in the University Athletic Association, after posting a 76-52 verdict over the Spartans who slipped to 7-7 overall, 1-2 in the conference. Emory's record in league action is the program's first 3-0 start since the 1997-98 season.
Castillo, who entered the game shooting just 27.3 percent from the floor in the first two conference games, sank nine-of-18 from the floor including a career-best five three-point field goals in six attempts. Castillo also contributed with a team-high seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Sophomore Ilene Tsao came off the bench to add 13 points, hitting five-of-six from the floor, while senior Savannah Morgan rounded out the club's double-figure scorers with 10 while doling out six assists and tying her career high with six steals.
Emory shot 40.8 percent (29-of-71) from the floor and capitalized on its three-point attempts, draining 10-of-18 from beyond the arc, its third contest of 10 or more triples this season. Case Western hit on 38.2 percent (21-of-55) of its field goal opportunities but struggled with its three-point shooting, converting just two-of-20 from distance. The Spartans did finish with a 44-36 advantage in rebounding but turned the ball over 31 times, leading to 33 Emory points.
Emory sank six of its first seven field goal tries in building a 16-4 lead just 3:43 into the game as Castillo hit a pair of three pointers in that stretch. Holding an 18-10 edge, Eagle sophomore Khadijah Sayyid accounted for five points in a 7-0 burst that extended their lead to 25-10 with 11:52 left in the opening half. The Eagles would lead by as many as 18 points on three occasions over a two-minute span before the Spartans clawed back to within 13 points, 40-27, with 4:11 remaining. The Eagles responded by scoring eight unanswered points, four by Morgan, to claim a commanding 48-27 bulge with 1:39 left. A trey by CWRU cut Emory's lead to 48-30 at the half.
In the second half, a 10-3 Case Western charge cut a 20-point Emory lead to 13 points, 55-42, with 10:18 left in the contest, but three pointers by Castillo, senior Hannah Lilly and Tsao accounted for all the scoring in a 9-1 spurt by the Eagles that put them safely ahead, 64-43, with 7:34 on the clock.
Emory returns to action next Friday (Jan. 24) when it plays at New York University in a 6:00 pm start.
