Box Score Six different Emory University pitchers combined to allow just one run on five hits Tuesday afternoon, leading the Eagles to their fourth-straight win, a 3-1 triumph over Berry College at Chappell Park.
The Eagles now stand at 12-9 this season, after winning six of their last seven contests, while Berry dropped to 12-12 for the campaign with the loss.
Freshman Paul Merolla started for the eagles, allowing just a hit and a walk through two scoreless innings, before giving way to sophomore Dylan Finer, who added a pair of scoreless innings of his own. Finer left the game after the fourth inning with a 1-0 lead, after a Daniel Iturrey single in the third inning gave Emory the early advantage.
Berry tied the game in the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch from reliever Matt McMahon, but a strike out looking ended the frame and prevented the go-ahead run from scoring. The Eagles wasted little time regaining the lead though, scoring two in the bottom of the inning when Iturrey drove in sophomore Wes Peacock with a groundout, and junior Brandon Hannon crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
McMahon pitched a scoreless sixth inning for Emory, while sophomore Michael Byman, freshman Steven Summey and sophomore Graham Bloomsmith each added scoreless frames of their own to secure the victory. McMahon picked up the win, improving to 2-2 on the season, while Bloomsmith secured his third save of the season by retiring the Berry side in order in the ninth.
Peacock finished the game two-for-four with two runs, extending his hitting streak to 16 games. Hannon added two hits, while Iturrey drove in a pair of runs, and now is tied for the team lead with 17 RBIs this year.
Senior reliever Levi Austin took the loss for the Vikings, dropping to 0-2 for the campaign.
Emory will look to continue its momentum going on Friday, when it opens a three-game series with Covenant College at Chappell Park at 3:00 PM.
