Box Score Junior Hannah Lilly scored a game-high 16 points to lead three double-figure scorers as the Emory women's basketball team defeated Huntingdon College in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament. The Eagles registered their sixth straight victory and raised their overall record to 24-3 following the 88-62 triumph over the Hawks who ended their season with a record of 19-10. The game was played at the Woodruff PE Center on the Emory campus.
Emory ended the game shooting 46.7 percent from the floor (35-of-75) from the floor and held Huntingdon to just 29.6 percent (16-of-54), the fifth time this year it had held an opponent to less than 30 percent. The Eagles enjoyed a decided edge on the glass, grabbing 52 boards to the Hawks' 37. Senior Misha Jackson led Emory in that category with 12 caroms, her 11th double-figure effort in that category this season. As has been the case for most of the year, Emory's defense played a key role in the win, coming up with 20 steals and forcing 27 Huntingdon miscues. The Eagles finished with a 28-13 edge in the points off turnovers in that department.
Emory seized control of the game early on, using a 14-1 run that turned a one-point advantage into a 29-15 cushion with 9:30 left in the first half. Lilly scored seven of her 12 first-half points in that stretch while Jackson and senior Danielle Landry and junior Savannah Morgan all chipping in buckets. Holding a 12-point lead with 8:35 left, Emory kept the Hawks scoreless for over a five-minute stretch while rattling off 16 unanswered points to bolt to a 45-17 margin. Lilly and junior Marissa Resnick started the bombardment with back-to-back triples while freshman Ilene Tsao added four points. Emory ended the half shooting 50 percent (21-of-42) from the floor in zooming to an insurmountable 53-28 lead at halftime.
The Eagles continued to dominate the game throughout the second half, totaling a 22-2 run that stretched their lead to 43 points with 12 minutes left in the game.
Lilly ended up converting six-of-12 from the floor and drained a pair of three-point field goals in posting her 19th double-figure performance of the year. Resnick contributed a season-best 12 points that saw her knocked down three treys. Morgan rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.
Next up for Emory will be a Friday (Mar. 8) matchup against the winner of the Lewis & Clark vs. Whitman contest at a site to be determined.
