Box Score The Eagles hope for a three-peat at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Baseball Championships took a serious hit on Monday afternoon, as Emory University dropped a 6-2 game to Washington University (Mo.) at Sanford Memorial Stadium in Sanford, Florida.
With the loss, Emory now stands at 0-3 in conference play and 6-8 overall this season. It marked the team's fourth loss in a row, and their sixth in the last seven games after a 5-2 start to the year.
The Bears got off to a quick start in the game, notching three-straight hits off sophomore starter Connor Dillman, including an RBI single from Chris Lowery. However, Dillman induced a groundout, a strikeout and a fly out to get out of the jam without any further damage.
The Eagles would tie the game in the bottom of the third inning, with freshman Ben Vizvary leading off the frame with a base hit, eventually scoring on a two-out double from junior Brandon Hannon.
Washington would take over the lead for good in the top of the sixth though, scoring three runs with two outs in the inning, including a pair on another Lowery single. After Emory pulled the game to 4-2 on an RBI double from Daniel Iturrey in the bottom of the sixth, the Bears added unearned runs in the seventh and ninth, expanding the lead to the final score of 6-2.
Dillman took the loss, dropping to 0-2 on the season. Freshman Steven Summey pitched two and a third innings in relief, allowing an unearned run on one hit.
Washington University starter Stephen Bonser pitched a complete game to earn the win, allowing just five hits and striking out six. Emory sophomore Wes Peacock had one of the five hits, extending his hitting streak to nine games.
With the win, Washington now stands at 6-3 this season and 2-0 in UAA play.
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, March 12th at 5:00 PM against the University of Rochester at the UAA Championships in Sanford, Florida.
