Emory Offense Explodes in 18-8 win at Oglethorpe

Box Score

Led by a six-RBI performance from junior right fielder Brandon Hannon, the Emory University offense exploded for 18 runs on Wednesday afternoon in an 18-8 win at Oglethorpe University.  The win brought the Eagles' record to 3-1 on the season, while the Stormy Petrels dropped to 0-4.

Hannon became just the 16th player in Emory history to drive in six or more runs in a game, finishing the contest four-for-five with four runs scored and a triple, while stealing three bases on many attempts.  He was just one run and one RBI shy of matching school single-game records.

Hannon is now batting a team-best .500 this season (nine-for-18), and leads all Eagles with seven runs, seven RBIs and five stolen bases.

Junior Daniel Iturrey added a two-for-three performance at the plate with three RBIs and two walks, while junior Jared Kahn broke out with a three-for-five day, stealing a pair of bases, driving in two and scoring three runs.

Emory jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three and a half innings, before the Stormy Petrels battled back against starter Michael Byman.  Byman left the game with a no-decision after allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings of work.

Freshman Steven Summey made his collegiate debut on the mound in relief, and despite allowing a pair of inherited runners to score in the fifth innings, settled in to give up just one hit and two walks over three scoreless innings, striking out three.

Meanwhile, Emory's offense extended its lead with back-to-back six run innings in the sixth and seventh innings, turning a 6-5 game into an 18-5 lead. Oglethorpe would score three in the ninth, but it would be too little too late for the Stormy Petrels.

Summey earned the victory in relief for the Eagles, improving to 1-0 on the season.  Freshman Zachary Racusin added a perfect eighth inning in relief, while junior Matt McMahon allowed just one hit and no earned runs in the ninth.

Emmett Goodman dropped to 0-2 after taking the loss for the Stormy Petrels.

Emory will be back in action with a two-game series against Bates College this weekend, with games scheduled for 2:00 PM on Friday, February 22nd and 1:00 PM on Sunday, February 24th at Chappell Park.
