Emory Women's Basketball Defeats Carnegie Mellon -- Will Battle Rochester Next Saturday For Outright UAA Title

Box Score

Senior Misha Jackson led three double-figure scorers in pacing the No. 17-ranked Emory women's basketball team to a win over Carnegie Mellon Sunday afternoon.  The Eagles boosted their overall record to 21-3, 11-2 in the University Athletic Association, following a 76-55 triumph over the Tartans who slipped to 13-11 overall, 5-8 in the league.  Emory's 21 wins ties the 1994-95 squad for the most wins by an Eagle team in a season.

Jackson sank seven-of-10 from the floor and five-of-seven from the charity stripe in posting her 17th double-figure scoring effort of the season.  Jackson also grabbed 12 rebounds, her league-best eighth double-double of the campaign.  Junior Hannah Lilly chipped in 15 points, sinking six of her 11 field goal attempts, including three-of-five from beyond the arc, in coming up with her 17th double-figure scoring performance of the season.  Senior Danielle Landry rounded out the team's double-figure scorers with 10 points.   Freshman Ilene Tsao totaled seven points and came up with four of the team's 19 steals.

Emory shot 51.6 percent (30-of-64) from the floor and knocked down five three-point field goals during the opening 20 minutes of play in bolting to a 41-24 halftime lead.  With the score knotted at 15-15, the Eagles went on a 12-2 run with, Tsao and classmate Khadijah Sayyid hitting triples in that stretch, to claim a 27-17 advantage with 7:02 left.   After the Tartans cut the gap to seven points with 6:21 left in the stanza, Jackson scored six points in a 14-2 blitz that put Emory ahead by a substantial 41-22 margin with just over a minute left in the period.

Lilly scored 12 points over the final 20 minutes of action as the Eagles were never seriously threatened.   After a pair of CMU charity tosses drew it to within 14 points with 13:19 left in the game, Emory unleashed a 14-1 barrage that saw six different players score in silencing any comeback attempt CMU.    Emory ended the afternoon hitting 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the floor while limiting the Tartans to 36.4 percent (16-of-44).   The Eagles badgered CMU into 32 turnovers that they parlayed into 46 points.

Today's victory sets up next Saturday's (Feb. 23) game against Rochester (19-5, 11-2, UAA) for the outright UAA title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA D-III Tournament.   The Yellowjackets hosted Case Western on Sunday and edged the Spartans by a 72-68 count.  Tip for that game will be at 2:00 pm.
