Box Score Emory senior Savannah Morgan scored a career-high 29 points and the Eagles used a strong second half in coming away with a victory at Berry College Saturday afternoon. No. 12-ranked Emory boosted its record to 6-0 following an 87-73 triumph over the Vikings who fell to 3-3.
Morgan scored 19 points over the final 20 minutes of action and wound up the afternoon hitting 12-of-19 from the floor, including both of her three-point field goal attempts, en route to registering her fifth double-figure scoring effort of the season. In addition, Morgan dished out eight assists and came up with three of the squad's six steals. Senior Hannah Lilly and freshman Shellie Kaniut posted double-digit scoring for Emory with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Emory connected on 50 percent (37-of-74) of its field goal attempts, including five-of-10 from three-point range. Berry was successful on 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the floor and drained seven of its 17 tries from beyond the arc. The Eagles held a 42-36 edge on the glass and were paced in the category by senior Gabi Whitmer's career-high eight caroms.
Holding a three-point lead midway through the second half, Morgan scored nine points during a 12-2 Emory run that upped its advantage to 72-59 with 6:53 left in the game. After a trey by BC's Mel McLean cut the Eagles' edge to nine points, a three pointer by Morgan started a 7-0 spurt that put the game out of reach at 80-64 with 2:42 on the clock. With Morgan pacing the offensive effort by hitting seven-of-nine of her field goal tries, the Eagles drained 54.8 percent from the floor (17-of-31) over the final 20 minutes including three triples.
Berry led for the majority of the first half, leading by as many as seven points on two occasions. The Eagles faced a 30-23 deficit before a bucket by Whitmer, a three pointer by freshman Fran Sweeney and a jumper by Lilly knotted the score with 6:22 left in the stanza. A layup by Olivia Harrell gave the Vikings a four-point edge with 3:40 remaining but baskets by Morgan and senior Selena Castillo deadlocked the game at 40-40 with 1:38 left. Each team would score a pair of baskets to go into the intermission tied at 44-44.
Emory returns to action on Monday (Dec. 9) when it plays at Agnes Scott College.
