Emory Men's Basketball Races By Covenant College In Home Opener

Box Score

Senior McPherson Moore led five double-figure scorers with a game-high 20 points in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a Tuesday-evening victory over Covenant College.  The Eagles, playing their first home game of the season, raised their overall record to 6-2 following a 110-76 decision over the Scots who fell to 3-3.

Emory unleashed a relentless offensive attack in tying the program's fourth-highest point total in a game, concluding the night hitting 46.4 percent (39-of-84) from the floor compared to the Scots' mark of 33.8 percent (24-of-71).  The Eagles saw seven players record three-point field goals, finishing with 10 triples on the night while Covenant converted five from long range.  Emory posted a 51-46 edge on the glass and was led in that category by senior Jake Davis and sophomore Alex Foster, both of whom grabbed seven boards.  Tonight's effort represented Emory's fifth consecutive game of 90 or more points and second of 100-plus points.

Moore was successful on eight of his 14 field goal tries in chalking up his fifth straight and sixth double-figure scoring performance of the year.  Foster came off the bench to chip in a season-high 14 points, sinking six-of-11 from the floor.  Davis (13 pts.), freshman Austin DaGue (12 pts.) and junior Michael Florin (11 pts.) rounded out the team's double-figure scorers.

Emory never trailed in the contest as it raised its all-time mark to 23-5 in home-opening games.  Holding a seven-point edge with 13:27 in the opening stanza, the Eagles went on a 12-0 scoring spree to bolt out to a 19-point cushion, 28-9, with 10:10 remaining.  A bucket by the Scots' Colton McGriff narrowed their deficit to 15 points, but eight unanswered points by Emory, four coming by Foster, boosted its advantage to 46-23 with a little under three minutes remaining.  However, Covenant stayed within striking distance by scoring the last nine points of the half to cut its gap to 14 points at the intermission.

Davis accounted for the first six points of the second half with the Eagles taking command of the game, 52-32.  Emory sealed the outcome when it blitzed the visitors with a 14-1 attack, with Moore scoring the first four in that run, to go up by a 70-40 count with 13:30 left.  By the time the final horn had sounded, 13 of Emory's 15 players found their way into the scoring column.

Emory returns to action on Dec. 9 when it plays at Oglethorpe University.
