Box Score Senior Jake Davis continued his torrid start to the 2013-14 season with a game-high 31 points to pace five double-figure scorers in leading the Emory men's basketball team to a resounding win at LaGrange College on Sunday. The Eagles captured their fourth straight and raised their overall record to 5-2 following a 106-84 victory over the Panthers who fell to 3-3.
Davis, who scored 22 of his total in the second half, wound up the contest hitting seven-of-15 from the field, including three-of-six from three-point range, and 14-of-17 from the charity stripe en route to his fifth performance of 20 or more points and second of 30-plus this year. Senior McPherson Moore came off the bench to add 16 points while junior Michael Florin (12 pts.), sophomore Davis Rao (12 pts.) and sophomore Will Trawick (11 pts.) rounded out the squad's double-digit scorers. Trawick had a monster game on the boards with a career-high 17 rebounds that tied the ninth-highest individual game mark in school history.
Emory shot a season-high 52.5 percent (31-of-59) from the floor and was successful on 44 percent (11-of-25) from beyond the arc in racing to the win. The Eagles marched to the foul line for 45 attempts and converted 33 of those for a 73.3 percent performance, the squad's fifth straight contest of 70 percent or higher. LaGrange ended the evening by hitting 38.7 percent (29-of-75) of its field goal tries and sank just 29.6 percent from distance (8-of-27).
With Davis scoring the first five, the Eagles got out of the blocks quickly by scoring the game's first 10 points, and later used a 6-0 run to build a 25-9 lead with 10:04 left in the first half. After a three-point play by the Panthers, a trey by Trawick started another 6-0 spurt that extended Emory's cushion to 31-12 with 9:30 left in the stanza. The Eagles would lead by as many as 23 points before going into halftime with a 51-32 lead. Rao picked up 10 first-half points, knocking down all four of his field goal tries including a pair of three pointers. Davis and Trawick added nine and eight points, respectively, to the first-half cause.
The Panthers opened the second stanza with five unanswered points only to see Emory respond with an 11-0 barrage, with Davis accounting for seven of those points, in building a 62-37 lead. The closest LaGrange would get from that point would 15 points on two occasions, the final coming 13:39 remaining.
Emory returns to action on Tuesday (Dec. 1) when it makes its home debut with a 7:00 pm contest against Covenant College.
