Box Score Emory freshman Shellie Kaniut scored a team-high 13 points to lead three double-figure scorers, and the Eagles used a swarming defensive effort in subduing Oglethorpe University Wednesday evening. No. 13-ranked Emory was successful in its first road test of the season and raised its overall record to 2-0 following a 77-50 decision over the Stormy Petrels who slipped to 1-1.
Emory shot 41.3 percent (33-of-80) from the floor and held OU to 34.8 percent (16-of-46). The Eagles enjoyed a big 50-36 advantage in rebounding, 19-7 on the offensive end. Emory forced 28 Petrel turnovers and came up with 19 steals in finishing with a 27-8 cushion in the points-off-turnovers category.
Kaniut connected on six-of-10 of her field goal attempts, including two-of-three from three-point range, in pacing the team's scoring efforts. Senior Hannah Lilly totaled 12 points and tied classmate Selena Castillo for game honors with eight rebounds. Castillo rounded out Emory's double-digit scorers with 11 points and came up with six steals. Senior Savannah Morgan turned in a strong floor game, dishing out seven assists with no turnovers, while scoring nine points, in 25 minutes of action. By the time the smoke had cleared, 12 of the 15 Eagles who played found their way into the scoring column.
Emory set the tone early, racing out to a 42-17 halftime lead. The Eagles sank 42.9 percent of their field goal attempts (18-of-42) while holding the Petrels to 26.3 percent (5-of-19). Emory continually harassed Oglethorpe during the opening 20 minutes of action, forcing 17 turnovers that it parlayed into 17 points. Holding a 7-4 lead three minutes into the game, the Eagles exploded for a 25-4 run that stretched their lead to 32-8. Morgan started that burst with a four-point play and later drained a three pointer while Kaniut sank back-to-back triples as part of her 10-point opening stanza. Morgan accounted for all of her points in the first stanza while Hannah Lilly chipped in six points and six rebounds in helping Emory to a 26-18 edge on the glass.
Oglethorpe scored the first five points of the second half to draw to within 20, 42-22, but Emory responded with a 10-5 run, capped by a Kaniut jumper, to take a commanding 52-27 lead with 12:04 left in the game.
Emory returns to action on Nov. 26 when it plays host to LaGrange College in a 6:00 p.m. start.
